After working for banks for nearly a decade, the team at Ashdown realized they wanted to work on other side of the fence and work with the businesses who needed financing, rather than for the lender. With their experience, they had developed strong relationships with a number of the top account managers and regional managers of the banks and credit unions and knew they could be a huge resource to those looking to finance.
These relationships have enabled Ashdown Capital to partner their customers with the most suitable bank and account manager from day one. As the company continues to expand, so does their network, which enhances their ability to always get you, the customer, the best opportunity.
Ashdown Capital is a firm that assists business owners and developers in finding financing for their business and projects at the most favourable terms — for them, not the bank. Our team is a collection of experienced advisors who know the ins-and-outs of banking institutions and have an expansive network of lenders to get banks competing for a company’s business. Since our inception, the team has worked with companies in the micro-space, as well as multinationals with over $250 million in revenue. In addition, the team has worked on property projects ranging in size from single-family homes to multi-story, multiphase townhouse/condo complexes, and also commercial/industrial properties. And this is only the beginning.
Our team of experienced commercial banking professionals have all channeled their entrepreneurial spirit by leaving their nine-to-five's and embarking on this new journey. We left the banks in order to help our clients find the right financing package, regardless of which financing partner it comes from.
Brad Kiendl is the founder of Ashdown Capital. After working for a Canadian bank, as well as a large international bank, Brad developed an in-depth understanding of bank credit approval processes, enabling him to tailor deals for each bank’s respective credit approval department. Further, he developed a thorough understanding of the pricing structures of individual institutions, and its relationship to risk, and uses this knowledge to initiate negotiations at the appropriate price point.
In working for the banks, he realized that his passion was for enabling his clients’ successes, rather than increasing bank profits. It was this realization that inspired Brad to found Ashdown Capital. Now Brad is able to solely be an advocate for his clients, instilling confidence that they have negotiated the most advantageous financing solution for their business or project.
Brad calls Langley home with his wife Melissa, and their son, Hudson. He is currently the Vice President of the Langley Chamber of Commerce, and he was instrumental in getting the Chamber’s U40 event series off and running. Outside of work, Brad plays men’s league hockey and football, and he is a low-handicap for hire for Texas scramble tournaments.
Ryan Turner is the other partner of Ashdown Capital. Ryan spent nearly a decade working as a Commercial Relationship Manager, and the last three as a Regional Manager, leading a high-performing commercial banking team. During this time, Ryan developed an in-depth understanding of bank credit and pricing approval processes, having both written deals as a Relationship Manager, and approved deals as a Regional Manager. With this knowledge, Ryan is able to negotiate the best structure and price point for his clients, knowing exactly what his peers are looking for when analyzing and approving new deals.
While quickly climbing the corporate ladder, Ryan realized that his passion was for helping clients and doing what’s right for them – not doing what’s right for the bank and its shareholders. Growing increasingly disillusioned with the banks and their preoccupation with targets, Ryan decided it was time to refocus on the cornerstone of our communities, small and medium-sized enterprise owners. As a Principal with Ashdown Capital, Ryan assists businesses in securing the right financing partner (as opposed to solely the financing partner he worked for) and advocate on their behalf to get them the solution and pricing they deserve.
Ryan calls Cultus Lake home with his wife, Angela, and their two children, Lyla and Violet. When not running around to various kids events, Ryan spends his free time playing men’s league hockey and football, and does his best to sneak away for the (more than) occasional round of golf.
Brian comes to Ashdown Capital having over 14 years of Corporate Lending and Credit Risk Management experience, with his most recent role being Sr Account Manager at Farm Credit Canada. Brian has had the opportunity to work for three Canadian Lenders in various locations across the country in a broad spectrum of financing scenarios, such as Senior & Subordinated Debt, Cash Flow Lending and Loan Syndications. Brian has worked with a diversity of industries including Hospitality, Agriculture and Agri-Business, Manufacturing, and Financial Sponsor & Private equity. He holds a Masters Degree in Business and Finance from Colorado State University. He currently resides in Abbotsford with his wife Anna and their four children.
Joe joins Ashdown Capital having spent over 12 years in Corporate & Commercial Banking, with his most recent role being Assistant Vice President, Corporate Banking at HSBC. Joe relocated to Vancouver from the UK almost 3 years ago to join HSBC; He previously worked in London for The Royal Bank of Scotland and Standard Chartered Bank. He has experience with Senior & Subordinated Debt, Cash Flow Lending, Loan Syndications, Trade & Working Capital Finance and Equipment Finance. Joe has worked with clients from a wide range of industries including Retail, Manufacturing, Consumer Goods, Business Services and Financial Services. He recently passed the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) level III exam and has submitted his application for membership with the CFA institute. Joe holds professional certifications in Corporate Lending from The London Institute of Banking & Finance and Securities & Derivatives from the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investment (UK).
Kern has been in the financial services area for his whole working career. Kern spent the first 16 years working at a global bank in commercial banking. He worked up the ranks through various positions and finished as a Regional Team Lead for a high performing commercial team. During this time, Kern gained knowledge and understanding of the deal structures and pricing strategies that the Bank was looking to operate within. This insight was crucial in working the best deals for his clients, and he will bring this knowledge to his clients at Ashdown.
For the past 4 years, Kern has taken his banking expertise into the private sector and worked as CFO for a well-established window coverings business. This experience was invaluable as it allowed Kern to get a solid understanding of the challenges that most business owners face when looking for financing and ensuring they are getting the best financing package possible.
Kern calls Vancouver home with his wife Sarah and their two children, Adam and Julie. Kern is highly involved with his children’s activities and devoted to giving back to his community. Kern is the head coach for Julie’s hockey team and is the treasurer for the Vancouver Minor Hockey Association. In addition, Kern is a volunteer facilitator for Junior Achievement of BC; is a certified professional accountant; and is a volunteer instructor for the Canadian Professional Accountant Financial Literacy initiative. In his own spare time, Kern enjoys hockey, snowboarding and golf.
